The department of anesthesiology was founded in 1957 by Professor Jue Wu, who is one of the pioneers in Chinese modern anesthesiology. Now, it has become one of the top cardiothoracic anesthesia centers in China, with more than 16,000 anesthetic procedures annually, including anesthesia for lung surgery, esophageal surgery, tracheal resection or reconstruction, cardiac valve surgery, surgery of congenital heart disease, CABG, and fiberoptic bronchoscopy.
It has 32 anesthesiologists and 21 nurse anesthetists in the department, including 2 professors, 9 associate professors, and 2 master supervisors. More than two-thirds of anesthesiologists have postgraduate experience.
The department has state-of-the-art equipments including anesthesia work-stations, monitors, all types of bronchoscope, airway tools, ultrasound devices, blood gas analyzers, CCO monitors, TCI pumps, coagulation and platelet function analyzer and cerebral oxygen saturation monitors.
Moreover, the department also focuses on education and research work. Both clinical and basic research are dedicating on the fields including organ protection, intra-operative atrial fibrillation, perioperative patient safety and ERAS, and outcome improvement. Since the first postgraduate student admitted in 2005, the department has trained 20 masters, and more than100 visiting anesthesiologists from all over the country, five of whom subsequently chaired anesthesia department.
