The pathology department is nationally recognized for its innovative technologies that provide accurate and timely diagnostics in the field of clinical and molecular pathology with a focus on thoracic diseases, especially lung cancer, esophagus cancer and thymoma. It also provides diagnostics for Shanghai Chest Hospital and professional training for resident doctors in the areas of thorax diseases, including lung cancer, esophagus cancer, other thorax benign and malignant tumors, and inflammation diseases.
There are altogether 31 people in the department, including two professors, one of which is doctoral supervisor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Among them, 10 doctors have master’s degree, and three have doctor’s degree. Dr Zhang Jie is the vice chairman of the chest pathology branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the editorial board of the Chinese Journal of Pathology. The pathology department is the master training unit of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the training base of Shanghai pathology Specialist (chest disease).
Moreover, the department has carried out 20,000 cases of routine pathological diagnosis per year, 20,000 cases of intraoperative frozen section diagnosis per year, all kinds of chest tumor biopsy, puncture, cytology, liquid based cytology and pleural cell block examination, immunohistochemistry and special staining.
There are immunohistochemistry laboratory and molecular pathology laboratory (National Health Planning Commission Pathology Quality Control Center (PQCC) demonstration laboratory). The molecular pathology laboratory has multiple technology platforms, including FISH, Arcturus laser capture microdissection system, real-time PCR systems and NGS platforms. Members of the lab have accumulated several years of academic and practical experience in molecular testing. The molecular lab has been approved by National Health Planning Commission Pathology Quality Control Center (PQCC) demonstration laboratory. The lab has tested more than 9,000 cases per year for gene variants associated with targeted therapy.
With the development of precision personalized medicine, it has become increasingly important to diagnose individuals accurately in order to identify the right treatment. Our aim is to address these problems and to provide guidance for clinical treatment in order to improve patient well-being.
