Nuclear Medicine Department

Established in 1982, the nuclear medicine department has advantages in imaging diagnosis, functional detection and radionuclide therapy of cardiothoracic diseases. It is completely configured with devices which are two SPECT/CT machines, one PET/CT machine and one technetium gas generator currently. More than 100,000 people have received various radionuclide examinations in the department in the past ten years, with an average annual growth rate of 15 to 20 percent. There are 18 medical staffs, including two senior staffs and seven intermediate staffs. The team is comprised of 8 physicians, one pharmacist, four nurses and five technicians. Of the 18 staffs, two with doctoral degrees and seven with master's degrees. 



On scientific research:

Fifteen projects have been approved, including one national natural science foundation project, 12 municipal natural science foundation projects and two municipal health bureau youth fund projects. It has obtained nine invention patents authorized by the state Patent Office, and one Shanghai medical science and technology award. The department has participated in the compilation of seven monographs on nuclear medicine. It has published 73 research papers including 17 ones on SCI journals.

The staffs have served as director of professional nuclear medicine committee of Shanghai Association of Chinese Integrative Medicine, national member of nuclear medicine branch of Chinese Medical Association, national member of nuclear medicine branch of Chinese Medical Doctors Association, youth member of nuclear medicine branch of Chinese Medical Association, deputy director of nuclear medicine professional committee of Shanghai Medical Association, member of clinical nuclear medicine professional committee of Shanghai Nuclear Society,member of expert committee of Shanghai Nuclear Medicine Quality Control Center, and editorial board member of Chinese journal on nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.

On clinical practice:

1. PET/CT imaging: the differentiation of benign and malignant tumors; the clinical staging and grading of malignant tumors; the localization and diagnosis of tumor metastasis; the differentiation of residual lesion, recurrence and scar necrotic tissue after tumor treatment; the monitoring and evaluation of anti-tumor therapeutic efficiency; seeking for primary lesion in patients with unknown original tumor; providing biological target areas to help formulate anti-tumor plans; evaluating the myocardial activity after myocardial infarction; distinguishing hibernating myocardium from inhibitory one.

2. SPECT/CT fusion imaging: to identify benign or malignant lesions of bone.

3. Gated myocardial perfusion imaging: to help diagnose coronary heart disease, develop treatment plan and evaluate prognosis.

4. Pulmonary ventilation/perfusion imaging: to provide more lung function parameters for pulmonary embolism and lung transplantation.

5. Cerebral blood perfusion imaging: to provide reliable imaging support for the co-treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
