Shanghai Chest Hospital is one of the earliest units to carry out cardiopulmonary bypass in China. In 1957, the first Chinese-made bubbling artificial heart-lung machine was successfully developed and in the following year it was used for the first time in Chinese clinical practice for open heart surgery.
In 1980, independent professional on-cycle team was founded. In 1986, the Chinese first monograph on “cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiopulmonary support” was published. In 1995, the independent administrative department of extracorporeal circulation was established. Since 1997, ECMO study was continuously carried out and from 2003 it started to be used in clinical practice.
In 2013, the department was honored to be the first batch of cardiopulmonary bypass training base with qualified practicing certificates. After 50 years of development, the extracorporeal circulation department has gained major domestic influence and important position in the field of cardiopulmonary bypass local and overseas.
Currently it is one of the only few independent departments of cardiopulmonary bypass in China. The scope of specialty covers routine cardiopulmonary bypass, various life support, (ECMO,VAD), collaborative lung transplantation and other relevant work. The amount of annual cardiopulmonary bypass operation is already up to 1,000 cases. The department is capable of various types of life support technology, including VAD and ECMO, which has accumulated more than 100 cases. The disease covers various types of acute heart failure, such as acute myocarditis, acute coronary syndrome, and various types of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by viral pneumonia, trauma and autoimmune diseases, extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), lung transplantation and donor support and etc. It has accumulated extensive experience in ECMO in different kinds of diseases and has successfully assisted ECMO technology application in other hospitals in Shanghai and other provinces.
